20 Years of Building
Systems That Actually Work.
His career spans over 20 years of building software — from industrial hardware to enterprise platforms and connected buildings.
He has built C++ systems for industrial hardware, designed enterprise platforms for building management, led engineering teams through large multi-year projects, and worked across the full range from old SCADA systems to modern cloud-based software.
From Bits to Systems is the book he wishes had existed when he started — and the one he now uses to onboard junior engineers at his firm.
From Curiosity to Craft.
The Engineering Career
Industrial C++ Systems
Began building embedded C++ systems for industrial hardware. Learned quickly that hardware constraints don't care about clean code — they care about correct code.
Enterprise Platform Architecture
Moved into enterprise software — building connected systems for commercial buildings. Discovered the gap between what universities teach about software and what enterprise teams actually need.
Cloud Migration and Team Leadership
Led teams through the shift from on-site servers to cloud-based systems. Began formally mentoring junior engineers. Noticed the same knowledge gaps in every new group of hires.
Appostrofy Technologies
Founded Appostrofy to build products and help organisations modernise. Currently leads a team of engineers across IoT, cloud, and enterprise systems projects.
Current Focus
Appostrofy Technologies
Building IoT and enterprise software products. Director and lead engineer on client engagements spanning connected buildings, industrial automation, and cloud infrastructure.
From Bits to Systems
Writing and publishing the book — a years-long project to document exactly what it takes to go from university to a productive software engineer in India.
Engineering Education
Giving guest lectures at engineering colleges in Mumbai. Developing practical training programmes that bridge the gap between university learning and real software work.
Mentoring
Working directly with junior engineers — both formally at Appostrofy and informally through the book's community. Focused on long-term craft development, not just interview prep.
The Firm Behind the Book.
Appostrofy Technologies is a specialist software firm focused on IoT, connected systems, and enterprise platform upgrades. The company builds products and provides engineering advice to clients who value precision over speed.
The insights in From Bits to Systems come directly from over two decades of engineering work — not from watching other people build software, but from doing it, day after day, in real production environments.
"What I'd tell my 22-year-old self."
"The language doesn't matter. Understanding why something works — the rules it follows, the limits it has, the trade-offs it makes — that's what grows with you over a career. Pick one language and go deep before you go wide."
"Stop trying to memorise frameworks and start understanding the problem they were built to solve. Every major design pattern exists because of a specific, recurring challenge. Find the challenge first."
"Your ability to explain what your code does — in plain language, to a non-technical colleague — is as important as your ability to write it. Technical writing is a superpower that almost no one develops early enough."
"The job market changes every 3–5 years. The fundamentals — how memory works, how data flows across a network, how teams coordinate — have barely changed in 40. Invest accordingly."
A trilogy in progress.
From Bits to Systems is the first book in Ashwin Kanhere's Foundation Series — a planned trilogy on software engineering for India's next generation of developers.
From Bits to Systems Publishing 2025
The technical foundation — from hardware to your first production system.
From Systems to Products Coming Later
How to go from writing code to owning and shipping a product.
From Products to Platforms Future
Architecture, organisation design, and building for scale.
Work with Ashwin.
Available for guest lectures, curriculum advice, and technical consulting. Priority given to Indian engineering colleges and early-stage tech teams.
